A day at the Stone Forest

Tall grey limestone pillars about 90 minutes from Kunming, and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Stone Forest (Shilin) is a landscape of limestone pillars and narrow paths between them. In 2007 it was listed by UNESCO as part of the South China Karst World Heritage site. It is also home to the Sani, a branch of the Yi people.

Suggested itinerary

  1. MorningPrivate car from Kunming, about 90 minutes by road.
  2. MiddayWalk the main paths of the Major Stone Forest at your own pace. Electric carts are available for the longer stretches.
  3. AfternoonLunch nearby, then back to Kunming.

Good to know

Some paths have steps and narrow gaps. Wear comfortable shoes, and choose a day that is not immediately after a procedure.
