Stairs, lanes and hotpot
A hilly city of stairways, lantern-lit lanes and the famous spicy hotpot.
In Chongqing, streets often become stairways and buildings have entrances on different floors. The old lanes are a good place to wander and eat.
Places we like
- Shibati. An old stepped neighbourhood in the city centre, now restored, with shops and snack stalls.
- Ciqikou. An old town on the Jialing River, known for street food.
- Liziba station. A monorail line runs straight through a residential building, and there's a viewing platform below.
Suggested itinerary
- AfternoonShibati and the lanes around it.
- EveningHotpot. Ask for a split pot, half spicy and half mild.
Good to know
After dental work, very hot or spicy food may not be a good idea for a few days. Ask your dentist. Summers in Chongqing are hot and humid, so spring and autumn are the most comfortable for walking.
